Navigating the Complexity of Data Together

Find support in the industrial ontology community

What is an Ontology?

An ontology is a “formal, explicit specification of a shared conceptualisation” (Studer, 1998). Using ontologies, we can model (or conceptualise) our data in uniform (or formal) and shared (or explicit) manner. Put simply, ontologies enable us to categorise our data, and explicitly model the relationships between data assets. Ontologies allow us to establish a “common language” for our data, allowing us to search for, maintain, and integrate data in modern ways.

You might see the word ontology described in many ways such as “linked data”, “semantic web”, “knowledge graph” or “conceptual model”.

For more on understanding ontologies, see our blog for Explaining Ontologies to your Boss.

The Complexity of Industrial Data

At equonto, we specialise in industrial data. Industrial data is uniquely complex because much of the data that we work with is unstructured or is distributed across several data sources.

Our trainers and consultants have years of experience working within industrial organisations who have a common goal in reducing the complexity of their industrial data.

What Ontologies Can Do For You

Software Production Team

Improved Data Integration: Ontologies enable you to combine data from different sources more efficiently and effectively. This can assist with knowledge sharing and data governance.

Quality Assurance: Ontologies allow you to perform semantic reasoning to infer new facts in your data as well as checking for consistency and correctness.

Reduced Maintenance Costs: Re-using openly developed standards, protocols, and best practices to reduce the development and maintenance costs of your data systems.
